Bachpan Ka December by Hashim Nadeem is the author’s most nostalgic book, a coming-of-age novel about childhood, first love, and the winters that feel endless when you are young. First published in 2008, it is Hashim Nadeem’s second novel, and many readers call it his most tender work: a story that reminds every adult of the December of their own childhood.
Story Summary of Bachpan Ka December
The novel is set in the world of childhood: neighbourhood lanes, winter mornings, school days, and the small moments that feel enormous when you are young. Its hero is a young boy who grows up next door to a girl older than him and from a higher social standing. What begins as innocent childhood friendship slowly deepens into something he does not yet have a name for: a first love that is sincere, pure, and, by the rules of the adult world, impossible.
Hashim Nadeem tells this story with great tenderness and honesty. He shows how a child experiences love differently from an adult: without calculation, without conditions, and with a complete trust that the other person will always be there. The December of the title is not just a season; it is a mood, cold and quiet and beautiful, that matches the boy’s inner world as he watches the girl grow up, make her own choices, and move toward a life he cannot be part of.
The novel’s ending carries its deepest lesson, one that reviewers have often quoted: sometimes, for the happiness of others, we must learn to step aside and accept what we cannot change. The boy’s growth from a child who wants to hold on, into a young man who learns to let go with grace, is what makes Bachpan Ka December more than a love story. It is a story about growing up itself, and about how our first loves shape the people we become.
